Call for Search Committee Members: Language Sciences Co-Director

As recently announced, long-time founding Language Sciences Co-director, Dr. Janet Werker, will be stepping down from her role as of July 1st, 2023. Dr. Werker will remain involved in Language Sciences, in particular as Principle Investigator of the Ensuring Full Literacy SSHRC Partnership Grant.

As such, Language Sciences will be striking a search committee to determine her successor, and is seeking Language Science members to serve on the committee from Dec. 12th, 2022 – May 31st, 2023.

Deadline to apply is end-of-day, Dec. 8, 2022.

Commitee Responsibilities

  • Attending and fully engaging with search committee meetings (or, if unable, providing written input to the committee chair ahead of the meeting date)
  • Establishing a detailed position description and developing a fair and consistent set of criteria for the incumbent co-director
  • Identifying a diverse pool of applicants, including IBPOC candidates and other members of the four federally-established employment equity groups
  • Reviewing applications consistently, fairly, and impartially
  • Developing screening and interview questions
  • Participating in interviews with selected candidates
  • Recommending finalists for the role

Composition

The search committee will be composed of 4-7 members, including:

  • At least two members from the faculty of Arts and one member from each of LangSci’s other governing faculties (Science, Medicine, and Education)
  • At least one member from each of the LangSci theme areas (The Communicating Mind and Body; Language, Sustainability, and Transnationalism; Evolving Language in an Information Economy)
  • At least two members of the current LangSci steering committee
  • At least one graduate students and/or postdoctoral fellows

Volunteering and Submission Details

Those interested in serving on the committee should submit their CV and a 1 – 2 paragraph explanation of their interest in serving on the search committee, a description of their commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, and a description of any relevant experience that may support their participation.
